Silver Lime
It is regarded as the “people’s tree.” The silver lime has always been planted in village centres, where people can enjoy it. In July and August, this impressive tree, with its strongly scented, cream-coloured flowers, provides a source of food for numerous insects. This species owes its name to the silvery hairs on the undersides of its leaves, which create a striking shimmer in the wind.

When the Ruhr region goes live for a night
The Ruhr region puts in an “ExtraSchicht” on the last weekend in June: for a whole night, the cultural event of the same name celebrates the region’s industrial heritage. Around one hundred thousand visitors then flock across the region to breathe new life into former coal mines, steelworks, museums and landmarks. Dance, light art, concerts, street theatre – anything is possible on this night, and it’s different every year.
The Night of Industrial Culture tells a story of change and new beginnings, of the power that lies within old walls when you give them new stories. Year after year, around 40 venues with some 500 events and 2,000 artists help bring art and culture to life in unusual settings.
Reason for planting
In 2001, ExtraSchicht was launched with the goal of bringing the region’s industrial heritage to life and specifically connecting it with one another. The festival celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2025. A reason for us not only to celebrate the Night of Industrial Culture, but also to dedicate a tree to Hugo. The choice of the silver lime tree is no coincidence: over 100 people voted for this tree on our social media channels. The silver lime is expected to be in full bloom by early July. Perhaps because ExtraSchicht is giving it the necessary starter fertiliser?
