The Board of Executives

The Board of Executives is the managing body of the RAG-Stiftung. Under the foundation’s articles of association, it is responsible for the strategic orientation and operational management of all the foundation’s activities. The three members of the Board of Executives are each appointed by the RAG-Stiftung’s Board of Trustees for a five-year term of office. Reappointment of them is permissible. The members of the Board of Executives are also members of the Supervisory Board of RAG Aktiengesellschaft.

Bernd Tönjes

Chairman of the Board of Executives

Bernd Tönjes (born 1955) studied mining at the RWTH Aachen university between 1976 and 1981 and earned a diploma degree as Engineer. 1982 he started his professional career as technical underground employee at Fürst Leopold/Wulfen mine of Bergbau AG Lippe. After various professional positions in the mining industry he was Mining Director of Heinrich Robert mine in Hamm between 1994 and early 1998 und subsequently Mining Director of Ewald/Hugo mine of Deutsche Steinkohle AG in Herten until the end of 1999.

2000 he became Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Steinkohle AG and was Chairman of the Board since May 2001. Additionally he was nominated to Member of the Executive Board of RAG Corporation in 2004 and was Chairman of the Board from 2008 until his switch to RAG-Stiftung.


In May 2018 he was appointed to Chairman of the Board of Executives of RAG-Stiftung and subsequently to Chairman of the Supervisory Boards of Evonik Industries AG and RAG Corporation.

Bärbel Bergerhoff-Wodopia

Member of the Board of Executives

Bärbel Bergerhoff-Wodopia (born 1954) began her professional career as a business management trainee at RAG Aktiengesellschaft. She subsequently held various managerial positions at the company. 
From March 2004 on, Ms. Bergerhoff-Wodopia was the Operating Director for Personnel and Social Issues for the Technology and Logistics Services Ruhr/Saar at RAG.

She was appointed to the RAG-Stiftung's Board of Executives on 1 December 2012. Since December 2012 she has also been a member of the Supervisory Board of RAG Corporation. Ms. Bergerhoff-Wodopia has also been a member of the Supervisory Board of VIVAWEST since July 2013 and became its Chairwoman at the beginning of April 2019.


She has also been a member of the Administrative Board of RWTÜV e.V. since June 2014.


She is the Chairwoman of the IG BCE’s Human Resources Committee and a member of the Administrative Board of the IG BCE.


Since 1 January 2019 she has been the Chairwoman of the Managing Board of DMT and the Chairwoman of the Advisory Council of DMT LB. The only operating company of DMT is DMT-Gesellschaft für Lehre und Bildung mbH (DMT LB), which manages the Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola and the Deutsches Bergbau Museum (DBM). Consequently, on 1 January 2019 Ms. Bergerhoff-Wodopia also became the Chairwoman of the University Council of the Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola and the Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees of the Deutsches Bergbau Museum in Bochum.


Ms. Bergerhoff-Wodopia has also been a member of the Supervisory Board of Essen University Hospital since March 2015. She has been its Chairperson since July 2019. Since July 2017 she has also been a member of the Governing Board of ZDF, the Deputy Chairwoman of its Investment Committee and a member of its Finance and HR Committee.


She has also been the Spokesperson of the Diocesan Council for Education in the Diocese of Essen since June 2019, a member of the Administrative Board of the Folkwang-Museumsverein e.V. since October 2020 and a member of the regional Advisory Council Essen of Deutsche Bank since January 2021.

Dr. Jürgen-Johann Rupp

Dr. Jürgen-Johann Rupp

Member of the Board of Executives

Dr. Jürgen-Johann Rupp (*1956) studied law at the University of Mannheim from 1977 to 1982. After completing his law studies and passing his second state examination in 1985, he worked as a research assistant at the Department of Public Law and Tax Law at the University of Mannheim until 1987.

Between 1987 and 1989, Rupp worked in the Legal Department of VDEW in Frankfurt. He subsequently moved to the legal affairs team at STEAG AG. This was followed by other professional positions, as a Managing Director of STEAG Fernwärme GmbH and in the management of the German and international energy business of STEAG AG. He was appointed Commercial Director of STEAG AG in 2005.


At the beginning of 2007 he became a member of the Board of Executives of the present-day RAG Aktiengesellschaft. Here he was responsible for the Corporate Division Finance until moving to the RAG-Stiftung.


Rupp was appointed Chief Financial Officer of the RAG-Stiftung in April 2019.
