After training as a wholesale and international trade specialist, Helmut Linssen (born 1942) earned a doctorate in economics and social science. He is also an entrepreneur with a medium-sized business.
He has been a member of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) since 1972 and has held numerous political offices.
Among other positions, he was a Member of the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament for 30 years, Secretary General of the CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia, Chairman of the CDU political caucus in the state parliament from 1990 to 1999, and Chairman of the Committee for Business, Medium-sized Enterprises, and Technology from 2000 to 2005.
During this time he was also Senior Vice President of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia. From 2005 to 2010 he was Finance Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia.
He was a member of the Supervisory Boards of the RAG Corporation and RAG Deutsche Steinkohle AG from 2008 to 2010. From 2010 to 2014 he was the Treasurer of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and a member of its Presidency.
He was appointed to the Board of Executives of the RAG-Stiftung on December 1, 2012. Since December 2012 he has been a Member of the Supervisory Boards of the RAG Corporation and RAG Deutsche Steinkohle AG. Since July 2013 he is Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Vivawest GmbH.
