An avenue for Hugo
At the initiative of the RAG-Stiftung, an avenue with around 40 trees will be created in the coming years in the middle of the Hugo Landscape Park, along the highly frequented footpath linking Brößweg with the Rungenberghalde slag heap. With this voluntary measure, the RAG-Stiftung is making a contribution to regional climate adaptation and thus laying another important building block in transformation of the former hard coal mining regions.

European nettle tree
Celtis australis
The European nettle tree is ideal for planting in city centres. It tolerates heat and drought and is pretty undemanding as regards the type of soil it needs: It thrives on any soils – from acidic to slightly alkaline conditions. From September, it bears fruit that is
traditionally used in South Tyrol to make desserts, for example.

Hungarian oak
Quercus frainetto
The Hungarian oak is an East Mediterranean oak species that makes low demands on the soil. The striking, stately tree is highly drought- and heat-tolerant. It is therefore suitable for urban locations and is of interest in terms of its resilience to the effects of long-term climate change.

Rungenberg slagheap
■ Height above NN: 115 meters
Height of the embankment: 67 meters
Area: 63 hectares
The slag heap was caused by the mining of the former Hugo colliery. Today, it is largely green again and partly wooded. From Horster Straße or the Schüngelberg settlement, walkers can access the slag heap via numerous paths that wind their way up the mountain in large loops - alternatively, a staircase with around 300 steps leads to its summit. Two pyramids, heaped up from black tailings, rise into the sky as a double peak. The Rungenberg spoil tip is part of the Route of Industrial Heritage.

Spaeth alder
Alnus x spaethii
The tree species was bred at the beginning of the last century as a cross between the Japanese and the Caucasian alder. Its natural habitat is often along rivers or in damp areas. Since it has been crossed with the Japanese alder, however, the Spaeth alder can also thrive in dry locations. Spaeth alders are regarded as undemanding, wind-resistant and lime-tolerant.

Sweet chestnut
Castanea sativa
The sweet chestnut is also known as the Spanish chestnut or just chestnut. It is very popular because of the edible nuts it produces. With its lush flowers, the sweet chestnut is also a source of food for many insects. The tree species from southern Europe is mainly used for agricultural purposes and has been cultivated for a long time for its starchy nuts. It was named Tree of the Year in 2018.

What this tree represents
For perpetuity
The RAG-Stiftung finances perpetual obligations from German hard coal mining along the Ruhr and Saar rivers and in Ibbenbüren. They comprise pit water management, polder measures and ground water purification at some former coking sites.
These tasks are perpetual because rainwater and surface water constantly seep into the underground mine buildings. On its way down, the water dissolves numerous salts and minerals from the rock. It must therefore not become mixed with our precious ground water reserves. To prevent that, RAG pumps over 70 million cubic metres of pit water every year in the Ruhr region alone on behalf of the RAG-Stiftung. More than 1 billion cubic metres of water are moved as part of polder measures. All that is done to ensure that the coal mining district does not get its feet wet in the future. After all, mining has meant that some places are up to twenty metres deeper than they were before coal was extracted from them. Financing by the RAG-Stiftung reduces the burden on the public sector. Hard coal mining is thus the only industry in the world to pay for the economic and ecological consequences of its past out of its own pocket.
Occasion for planting
On 21 December 2018, the Prosper-Haniel mine was the last colliery in the Ruhr region to cease production. That marked the end of around 200 years of mining history in Germany – and another milestone: the beginning of financing of the perpetual obligations by the RAG-Stiftung. The RAG-Stiftung commemorated that historic day by planting this tree.

What this tree represents
From black gold to blue gold
RAG is responsible for fulfilling the perpetual obligations on behalf of the RAG-Stiftung. In the Ruhr region, an underground network of inlets and waterways means that pit water management can be concentrated at six sites in the future. Where black gold was once mined, blue gold is now being protected. With its water management concept, RAG now reduces pollution in around 240 kilometres of watercourses in the Ruhr region. The quality of the water is examined at short intervals by an independent institute.
In some places, the changes caused by mining are also accompanied by positive effects: For example, depressions due to mining have evolved into wetlands with rich fauna and flora. There are also interesting prospects from the use of geo-monitoring and state-of-the-art measurement technology. The data obtained can also be utilised outside post-mining activities in the medium term – for example, in agriculture and forestry, where raised ground water and surface water can help minimise damage caused by drought. Or in developing models that enable better forecasting and protection against hazards resulting from extreme weather events such as heavy rain.
Occasion for planting
In March 2023, the last of what used to be four sites for discharging pit water into the Emscher was decommissioned. Since then, the river has been free of pit water for the first time in over 100 years. The RAG-Stiftung planted this tree to commemorate
this important milestone and the special responsibility we all have to preserve our ecosystems.

What this tree represents
On strong shoulders
The RAG-Stiftung was created from the former RAG-Beteiligungsgesellschaft with its profitable subsidiaries in the fields of mining technology, power generation, real estate and chemicals. At its inception in 2007, the RAG-Stiftung’s assets in these holdings totalled around EUR 6.4 billion euros. That figure had grown to EUR 17.6 billion by the end of 2023. Ensuring long term that the
foundation can accomplish its mission requires broad risk diversification for its assets. These now comprise the strategic holdings Evonik Industries AG, Vivawest GmbH and RSBG SE and broadly spread, global capital investments in shares, bonds, funds, SMEs and real estate. However, the RAG-Stiftung’s strategic holdings also include RAG Aktiengesellschaft, a wholly-owned subsidiary that is responsible for the operational management of the post-mining activities.
Together with all of its investments, the RAG-Stiftung contributes to achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The foundation makes particularly key contributions to ensuring clean water, biodiversity on land, sustainable cities and communities, innovation and a functioning industrial infrastructure.

The RAG-Stiftung conducted a comprehensive stocktake of its value contributions to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals in 2023. As part of that, it leveraged its extensive knowledge in all of its strategic holdings. Following a cross-company dialogue staged on 28 September 2023 with the goal of sharing experience and expertise, this knowledge was directly incorporated into further development of the RAG-Stiftung’s sustainability management work. The RAG-Stiftung planted this tree to thank all participants for their valuable input and stimuli that day.

What this tree represents
Shaper of the future
The RAG-Stiftung’s core task is to finance the perpetual obligations following the discontinuation of German hard coal mining. However, it also supports numerous projects in the fields of education, science and culture, provided they are connected with the German hard coal mining industry. The focus is on programmes that support children and young people in their educational
development – from kindergarten to career start. After all, education and equality of opportunity are important for a good future in the former hard coal mining regions. Our society cannot afford – from both a humane and economic viewpoint – to leave its young talents behind. The RAG-Stiftung’s support for science addresses important issues relating to post-mining and valuable geo-resources. Finally, the RAG-Stiftung promotes encounters, understanding and cohesion in a functioning community through its engagement in the sphere of culture.
Occasion for planting
A great honour for the coal mining industry’s musical tradition: In March 2023, the German UNESCO Commission included singing of the traditional miners’ hymn “Das Steigerlied” in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The song is thus officially German cultural heritage. This tree commemorates that special day. “Glück auf, Glück auf, der Steiger kommt” (“Good luck, good luck, the pit foreman is coming”) retains its special lustre even after the end of hard coal mining in Germany. The song stands for creative energy, solidarity and optimism – values that are worth carrying into the future. Good luck!
