The non-profit Teach First Deutschland (Teach First Germany) initiative aims at creating better educational opportunities for all children and young people who started out with disadvantages. By appointing additional qualified experts (Fellows) to work at schools in deprived areas for a period of two years, Teach First supports schools and thus its pupils.
In hardly any other industrial country, the social background has such great influence on the educational success of children as in Germany. One out of five teenagers complete their schooling without sufficient skills of reading, writing and mathematics – Teach First wants to change this by providing a helping hand: In schools, Fellows are to support pupils in a tangible manner. From different social positions, they will be actively engaged in ensuring equal educational opportunities in a successful school system on a permanent basis
Fellows in mining regions

In North Rhine-Westphalia, 28 Fellows are currently on duty, 14 of them in coal-mining regions. The RAG Foundation has been supporting Teach First’s temporary employment of four Fellows since the school year of 2009/10. This financial support has been extended to the school year of 2012/13. The target group are schools in mining areas affected by the adjustment process in the Ruhr area.
In agreement with Teach First, they are assigned to secondary and comprehensive schools in Bottrop-Eigen, Essen-Altendorf, Dortmund-Huckarde, -Lütgendortmund and -Nord, in Bochum-Gerthe, Gelsenkirchen Ückendorf, and Duisburg-Hamborn. The Fellows are university graduates that take part in the school lessons, supporting teachers in their everyday school life and helping individual pupils to meet the educational requirements. Their work also includes extracurricular activities such as afternoon classes like dancing or cycling.
