In 2009, the RAG Foundation – for the first time – provided funding for an apprenticeship programme organised by the state government of Saarland ensuring an inter-company vocational training for 24 participants during their first training year. The programme addressed young people in the Saar regions that could not be offered any training vacancies due to the loss of training positions at RAG Corporation.

Due to the tense situation as regards the available training positions in Saarland, it was very difficult to provide the participants with an inter-company vocational training at the beginning of their second training year. In summer 2010, the state government of Saarland confirmed it would continue to provide funding for all 24 participants of the programme. The participants have been qualified by TÜV NORD Bildung Saar GmbH (former RAG Bildung).
This is an overview of the realised and planned funding measures for the Saar state programme:
September 2009: 24 participants in the 1st training year
September 2010: 24 participants in the 2nd training year
September 2011: 24 participants in the 3rd training year
September 2012: 24 participants in the 4th training year
Since October 2011, the RAG Foundation has been promoting a second project initiated by the state government of Saarland: the apprenticeship programme provided 30 new trainees – who did not have any apprentice position so far – with an extra-company training arrangement at TÜV NORD Bildung Saar GmbH. In addition to the state government of Saarland and the RAG Foundation, the RAG Corporation has also been engaged in the implementation of this training programme with an eye toward the looming shutdown of the Saar mine.

The RAG Foundation is thus continuing its commitment to compensate for the loss of trainee positions due to the termination of mining with the help of the state government’s funding project in the short term, enabling young people in (former) mining regions their entry into professional life. The programme started in October 2011, and will be running until 2016. In 2011, 30 participants were admitted to the first year of training.
