What types of funding do we provide?

Established as early as in 2007, the RAG Foundation is not a classic foundation: as trustee of the public sector, it uses sales and dividends of Evonik Industries AG in order to finance - as of 2019 - the so-called "long-term liabilities" resulting from the termination of subsidsed German coal mining; thereby, regulating a socially acceptable phasing-out process by 2018.

According to the statutes, these social responsibilities of the RAG Foundation apply to all mining areas in the Ruhr and Saar regions. In addition to securing and increasing the Foundation’s assets to ensure the financing of long-term liabilities, the Foundation can also promote educational, scientific and cultural facilities located in the Ruhr and Saar regions provided that there is a connection to the adjustment process of the German coal-mining industry. This kind of funding, however, is to be considered subordinate to the Foundation’s principal purpose. Expenditure on funding projects is met by means of an annual economic plan adopted by the Foundations’ Board of Trustees. Currently, the RAG Foundation provides funding for the following activities related to German coal mining:

  • collaborating with institutions dedicated to education, science and culture that are located in the mining regions of Ruhr and Saar,
  • supporting processes that aim at developing perspectives for educational and cultural institutions located in the mining regions,
  • designing cooperative training programmes for the mining regions,
  • supporting initiatives and projects organised by third parties, particularly scientific studies related to the subject of coal mining,
  • supporting special cultural programmes and events taking place in the mining regions.

The RAG Foundation cannot provide funding for:

  • the financing of structural-policy measures regarding the mining regions of Ruhr and Saar,
  • the support of projects and measures that are not related to the subject of coal mining or to the mining regions,
  • activities that are already being funded by the RAG Corporation.
