Black and white sectors

In order to meet the requirements of fulfilling diverse specific tasks and prospects, the two groups have been separated into a “black” sector including the business fields of Hard-Coal Mining and Processing, and a “white” sector including the business fields of Chemicals, Energy, and Real Estate. The RAG Corporation focuses on reducing mining operations, while Evonik is to go public as well as successfully evolve on an entrepreneurial basis.

At the end of 2009, Evonik Industries AG decided to strategically realign their processes and focus on their core business of Specialty Chemicals. Consequently, the majority of Steag – Evonik’s subsidiary specialising in energy – was sold to a consortium of public utility companies at the beginning of 2011. In perspective, a separation from the business field of Real Estate is being planned.
