Long-term liabilities in coal mining in the Ruhr and Saar regions

Within the meaning of the Legacy Agreement, long-term liabilities in coal mining are permanent measures arising as a result of mining operations by RAG after the termination of subsidies for coal mining; including:

  • Measures of mine-water drainage
  • Measures of groundwater treatment at contaminated sites and corresponding aftercare measures
  • Measures, especially polder measures, for administration, processing and/or removal of permanent subsidence and surface damage due to coal mining

There is a clear distinction between long-term liabilities and damage due to mining subsidence. Subsidence damage is damage occurring to buildings and properties as a result of mining operations. Usually, rock movements such as submergence of ground, tilting, mirage and thrust boring cause this kind of damage.
